Dr. Julie Baker is Assistant Professor of Flute at Morehead State University. As an active flutist, in the Kentucky and Ohio regions, she performs regularly with the Cave Run Symphony, Queen City Opera and Springfield Symphony Orchestra. As a solo artist, Dr. Baker has performed with the Cave Run Symphony Orchestra, the MSU Symphonic Winds and as a guest soloist at the MSU Gala. She was a featured performer at the Scarborough Symphony Orchestra's Flute Music by Women Composers Festival (February 2022).
Dr. Baker embraces both the academic and creative aspects of music through her conference participations. She has presented and/or performed at the Kentucky Flute Society, the Mid-South Flute Convention and the National Flute Association Convention. She is invited to perform at the Kentucky Music Educators Conference (Feb. '26) and the Flute Society of Kentucky Festival (March) later this year.
As a skilled performer and pedagogue, Dr. Baker has given masterclasses and recitals across the US including the University of Florida, the University of South Florida, Ohio Northern University, Southeast Oklahoma State University and was the guest clinician for the East Tennessee State Woodwind Day in February 2025.
As a frequent adjudicator, Dr. Baker has judged the recorded round competitions for the Texas Flute Society, Florida Flute Association, Central Ohio Flute Association, and the National Flute Association. Additionally, Dr. Baker has adjudicated frequently in the region through KMEA District 8, 9 honor Band Auditions and All-State Auditions in both Kentucky and West Virginia.
With the help of her colleagues, Dr. Baker strives to improve the state of music education in Kentucky and support its educators. She is a frequent guest in Kentucky schools where she performs chamber recitals and leads masterclasses. She has led professional development workshops through MSU's Tri-State Band Clinic (Middle School) and High School Honor Band Clinic.
Dr. Baker currently serves President of the Flute Society of Kentucky. The yearly FSK festival offers flutists from all over Kentucky (and beyond!) to come reconnect with old friends and inspire a new generation of flutists.
As a student, Dr. Baker was a winner of the National Flute Association's Masterclass Performers Competition. Dr. Baker previously held the position of Adjunct Instructor of Flute at Mount St. Joseph University as well as teaching at the Music Academy at the Mount. Dr. Baker has also served on faculty as a Teaching Assistant at the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Baker's flute studio is comprised of many promising young flutists. Dr. Baker's MSU student are frequent performers in the KMEA Intercollegiate Band held at the annual conference. Students have earned prizes in the Discover Classical Rising Star competition, the Kentucky Flute Society Junior Soloist Competition, the Kentucky Flute Society Collegiate Competition, the Central Ohio Flute Association Competitions, and the Cadenza competition. Additionally, Dr. Baker's students have been offered seats in perform in the Dayton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, Jr. CYWE, Centerville Youth Orchestra and Honor Band as well as various District 12 and 14 honor bands, and the Wright State, Louisville and Eastern Kentucky University Honor Bands.
