Dr. Baker's Teaching Philosophy

Primarily a college teacher, my studio consists of both online high school and middle school students and my college teaching studio. All of my students come from different backgrounds, with different levels of experience and ability levels. However, what each of my students has in common, is their love for their music and their commitment to growth and knowledge. Flute lessons are an opportunity to learn, grow and be excited about playing the flute and learning new skills. Each student may have a different path, but I want to help guide them so that they reach their goals and their potential.

I love teaching students of all ages and abilities. Creating a diverse studio environment allows us to learn from each other and grow into multi-faceted musicians. My studio varies from beginners to adults learners as well as super star students who are on track for a music career. I love sharing my knowledge with each and every one of them. Every student is at a different musical stage and needs a customized approach to guide them along their path.

It is amazing to watch students transform as their confidence builds. At first, students may be tentative about doing something “right” until they realize what matters is the “try”.  Thomas Edison once said, “I have not failed, I have found 1000 ways something won’t work.” It is OK if something doesn’t work the first time- take stock of what does and make changes to improve in the future. Some of the most important lessons are learned by trying, adjusting, and trying again. Any student willing to try and learn from their experiences will be successful as there are limitless opportunities to formulate a new plan and try again.
